Nonviolent Austin has been gearing up to offer nonviolence training through the fall. We begin on Saturday, August 17th! Please contact me by email at jcrosby@sstx.org if you are interested, and get the news to friends who you know might want to take this training.
The plan is to use the Engage: Exploring Nonviolent Living text from Pace e Bene Press. We will meet on five Saturday afternoons through the rest of this year. The tentative dates are August 17, September 28, October 19, November 16, and December 21. They will be three-hour sessions, 2-5 p.m., at a place to be announced. This curriculum takes us through the whole spectrum from nonviolence toward self, toward others, to active nonviolent work for social change. The course through the fall is free. We highly recommend that you buy a copy of Engage. I will have several copies on the 17th for loan or purchase, and it is not critical that you have it before then. If you want to order it from Pace e Bene through the link below, though, by all means do.
In the winter, on a weekend in either January, February, or March, we plan to have a concentrated workshop with Veronica Pelicaric, one of the authors of Engage, and Rivera Sun, Veronica’s training partner and co-author on a new book coming out this fall. That weekend will cost $50 per person (to pay for getting the two trainers here), and we will try to have scholarships available for those who need them. The training through the fall is not a required prerequisite for that weekend, but it should prepare us very well for it. The goal is that by the end of that weekend, any of us who so desire should be fully qualified to lead trainings for other groups. We want to have a geometric progression of folks in Austin conscious of and trained in nonviolence in the Gandhian/Kingian tradition.
