The Neighbor-2-Neighbor (N2N) program meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month. N2N serves an area surrounding St. James’ Episcopal Church, where it is based. This area encompasses East Austin, Southeast Austin and Northeast Austin and represent the city’s poorest residents. The majority of those served are 60 years of age or older.
N2N is a source of reliable, helpful information and a trusted advocate for the needs of our high-risk neighbors. N2N brings needed resources to our neighbors that will improve their health and quality of life. These goals are accomplished through partnerships, dedicated staff/volunteers, and the provision of a variety of basic needs and services, including:
- N2N maintains a food pantry that provides a bag of groceries and, when available, meat products to neighbors at each meeting.
- Diapers, adult and child-sized, help families stretch limited budgets, while maintaining dignity and active lifestyles.
- Household items such as toilet paper, shampoo, and other necessities.
- 20 HEB cards with a value of $15 are distributed, via a lottery system, at each meeting.
- 10 Capital Metro 7-day bus passes are distributed, via a lottery system, once per month.
- Monthly screenings are available for blood pressure and diabetes management, plus educational sessions for better health and wellness.
- Utility bill assistance through our partnership with Austin Energy’s Plus 1 program
N2N depends upon volunteers, and we are always in search of expanding our volunteer base. Some duties include bagging groceries, serving snacks, room set up. We also need bilingual volunteers as we have many Spanish-speaking neighbors.
Supplies Needed:
Bags with handles- these can be paper bags or cloth. We use these for diaper distribution and have run out. At the moment, we also need egg cartons. Thank you.
