Music is integral to worship. Our identity as a people – what our values are, our culture, our theology, our mission – is often signaled to people by music before they ever hear it described in words. In spite of secular culture’s rational wordiness, people today crave a sense of wonder, mystery, holiness, transcendence. For those churches, like ours, who value liturgy, even the words alone, of course, carry a sense of transcendence, but music can undergird, amplify, illuminate the language of praise and prayer. Music gives wings to worship.
At St. James’, we are a singing church, and the music does not stop when the choir takes a break. However, this Sunday, the 10:15 choir will return, and we would like to invite you to consider joining us in this ministry that lifts up the voices of the congregation, that provides transcendent experiences by tackling challenging music, and that serves as a loving, formative small group in the church.
The 10:15 choir rehearses on the first Wednesday evening of the month and on Sunday mornings at 9:15 am. If you are discerning whether this might be a good next step in living out your own baptismal covenant, have a conversation with Helen Miers (mihmy55@gmail.com), our 10:15 am Choir Director. Try it out for a season. Your gifts of time and talent are valued here.
