QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS
A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is generally a nontaxable distribution made directly by the trustee of your IRA (other than a SEP or SIMPLE IRA) to an organization eligible to receive tax deductible contributions. You must be at least age 70½ when the distribution was made. Also, you must have the same type of acknowledgment of your contribution that you would need to claim a deduction for charitable contribution. See Records To Keep in IRS Pub. 526 (link: https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-publication-526).
The maximum annual exclusion for QCDs is $100,000. Any QCD in excess of the $100,000 exclusion limit is included in income as any other distribution. If you file a joint return, your spouse can also have a QCD and exclude up to $100,000. The amount of the QCD is limited to the amount of the distribution that would otherwise be included in income. If your IRA includes nondeductible contributions, the distribution is first considered to be paid out of otherwise taxable income. Please consult your tax professional concerning any questions.
Long-term and Legacy Giving
THE ST. JAMES’ EPISCOPAL CHURCH ENDOWMENT
An Endowment fund has been established by members of the church with the purpose of ensuring the longevity and the continuity of the church and its mission into the future. An Endowment fund is focused on providing for the long-terms needs of the congregation, and not on church annual operations or short-term emergencies. The interest earned from a large endowment fund can be used for the mission of the church while the endowment principal usually remains untouched and continuing to grow, as additional Planned Giving funds are added to the endowment principal each year. Endowment funds are not used to resolve short term church financial emergencies.
An Endowment Fund was established for St. James Episcopal Church in 2019. The rector or parish administrator can answer questions about the endowment fund or general questions about making an endowment gift. All Endowment gifts (large and small) are welcomed and all members can contribute to the Endowment Fund in honor or in memory of someone, regardless of the gift size.
PLANNED GIVING OPTIONS.
As stewards of God’s gifts, we build on the foundation left by those who came before us. We, in turn, have the opportunity, with a bequest to St. James’ Episcopal Church, to sustain and enhance parish ministries, programs, outreach, and campus for the benefit of future generations. As you reflect on how you will write your legacy, we hope you’ll consider including St. James’ Episcopal Church plans.
