On February 13, in honor of Absalom Jones Day and responding to Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s call to support HBCUs, we will dedicate our collection and any other gifts so designated to the Dorothy Orebo Scholarship Fund at Huston-Tillotson. Dorothy Orebo was a well-loved parishioner at St. James’ and a long-time principal at LBJ High School.
In 1992, Dr. Orebo was honored by her alma mater, Huston-Tillotson College with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
Outside her role as an educator, she was involved in the Austin community. She was an entrepreneur, as a single Black female owner of multiple real estate properties. She also believed in giving a voice to those who didn’t have one and was a role model for other Black professionals. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and served multiple times as the Foreman for Travis County Grand Jury.
For more than 50 years she was an active member of St. James’ Episcopal Church, serving as an usher, lay reader and a member of the Bishop’s Committee.
The Dorothy H. Orebo Scholarship honors her legacy and to annually recognize students from both LBJ High School and Huston-Tillotson University. One scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman from LBJ Early College High School. A second scholarship will go to a student teacher who will be teaching at LBJ Early College High School or another school in AISD in a high-risk area. These students should embody the qualities, characteristics, passion, and spirit that we cherished in Dr. Orebo as principal, teacher, trail blazer, and role model.
