Sunday Morning Adult Formation: Where we’ve been, where we’re headed

By The Rev. Robert Vickery

On the Fifth Sunday in Lent, we wrapped up a study of the rule of life that Presiding Bp. Michael Curry calls “The Way of Love.” Christianity is not described as assent to doctrine nor as doing good, but as a specific way of life, a life of love. As we strive to be disciples in “The Jesus Movement,” there are certain practices which nurture us. “The Way of Love” invites us into a weekly rhythm of seven spiritual practices: Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, and Rest. During Lent a large group of us had lively discussions about these seven practices and about how we apply them in our daily lives.

In the multitude of worship services Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Eve, and Easter Day there are plenty of opportunities for adult faith formation, but there will be no adult formation program at 9:10 a.m. on Easter Day.

On the 2nd Sunday of Easter, April 28, we invite adults and youth alike to work with the Living Compass assessment. “Living Compass” is a wellness ministry that helps us examine and improve our lives from four perspectives:

  1. HEART: Relationships; Emotions
  2. SOUL: Spirituality; Rest; Play
  3. STRENGTH: Resilience; Care for Body
  4. MIND: Vocation; Organization

Over the course of the season of Easter and the summer, St. James’ will offer opportunities to develop your own wellness and spiritual vitality.

During May, our 9:10 a.m. adult formation time will be a 4-week series, quite appropriate to Easter season, on “Resurrection.” We shall study and discuss the resurrection appearances described in scriptures and address the question:

“Why does the resurrection of Jesus matter to me and to my life?”

GOD IS NOT THROUGH FORMING ANY OF US. JOIN US!
