After attending just one service at St. James’, I knew I was home. I immediately wanted to get involved with the church and get to know people. I heard an announcement about an upcoming meeting for the Phenomenal Women group and decided to be brave and show up for a meeting. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would I be put on the spot? Would I fit in? Do I have to be phenomenal to attend?! I think it took all of five minutes at the first meeting at Barb’s house before I felt completely at ease.
The fellowship at these meetings is exactly what I was looking for as a new member at St. James’. I met Trish Wilson and Frances Patch at the first meeting I attended. I feel honored that I can now call both Trish and Frances my friends. As all of our schedules vary, a different group tends to show up for every meeting. That means I always have a chance to make a new friend and meet another member of St. James’. We usually have somebody from every service there, so it’s also nice to have the opportunity to get to know people who go to other services.
The first meeting that I attended included a fascinating presentation about the long term effects of PTSD. At the second meeting, I learned, or attempted to learn, how to do the Electric Slide! We sang carols in December and last month we discussed putting together hygiene kits to pass out to our neighbors in need. Each meeting is unique, and there is something to offer everybody throughout the year.
Regardless of what the monthly program is, the Phenomenal Women’s meeting is a time to have fellowship, a time to enjoy a meal together and a time to share our inspirations, reflections, and ideas with one another as we all journey through our spiritual lives. Even though I am still fairly new, being a part of Phenomenal Women makes me feel like a legit St. Jamesian! I treasure the friendships I have made and am continuing to make by being a part of this wonderful group.
Phenomenal Women gathers on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm. Contact office@stjamesaustin.org for the location or to get on the mailing list.
