News from the Larger Community

Please join us for a visit to the Esperanza Community on Saturday, May 27, 10:00am.

The Esperanza Community is a 150-person community in Austin for houseless people, building transitional “tiny houses” for shelter-less folks. The Other Ones Foundation (TOOF) has transformed what was at one time known as the “Abbott Camp” into a community of hope. We have visited the Community First! Village for houseless people, and this is an opportunity to visit another great project. Our host will be Jared Montes Slack, who has spent the last 20 years serving local churches as a pastor. He moved to Austin in 2012 to serve at First Baptist Austin as their Mission Pastor. He is now “serving with my friends at TOOF.” TOOF offers work opportunities, case management/housing navigation, hygiene facilities, and a community center with mail and internet access. Austin Chronicle: TOOF voted “Best Humanitarians for the Houseless,” May 2022.https://toofound.org/. Please meet us on Saturday, May 27, 10:00am at the Esperanza Community at 780 S Hwy 183, Austin, TX 78741, along the frontage road on the eastside of the Montopolis community, for an hour-long visit and tour.  Questions? Please contact Jim Harrington, jim@stjamesaustin.org.

The Rich Harvey Jazz Festival, May 26-27, First Presbyterian, 8001 Mesa Drive

Dear Friends of Rich Harney, you may recall hearing that a fund in memory of our friend was to be used for the production of his books and an eventual concert. That day has finally come. Thanks to those donations, we are having a 2 day festival in honor of Rich. May 26 and 27, at First Presbyterian Church and we are hoping you will join us in an evening with a few of Rich’s closest compadres playing his great tunes. Its an exciting line up and an evening in a lovely venue you won’t want to miss. Get your tickets here.
