Dear People of St. James’,
Part of living out our baptismal covenant is a faithful commitment to the work of repentance from the racism that keeps us from honoring the dignity of every human being, and working for justice and peace by recognizing and resisting systemic and institutional racism. If you are new to St. James’ or you have never participated in the One Human Race Workshop, an opportunity is coming! Join us at St. James’ in Founders’ Hall, June 4, 9 am- 5 pm. One Human Race strives to create a safe, open, and productive environment to learn and share about systemic racism and personal experience. One Human Race was founded by St. James’ members, and while it’s a ministry of the Myra McDaniel Union of Episcopalians, many of its volunteers are from St. James’. The spirit of the workshop is definitely St. Jamesian: everyone is welcome no matter where they are on their journey of understanding racism in our country.
One Human Race gives participants a foundation of knowledge about the roots and institutionalization of racism by showing all 3 episodes of Race: The Power of an Illusion. Attendees process each episode in moderated small groups, and presenters give examples of concepts such as internal culture and white fragility from their own lives.
These days One Human Race has earned the support of the Episcopal Health Foundation and expanded its reach to include the Diocese of Texas and, through online workshops, beyond. Once a year they bring the workshop home to St. James’. There’s no fee to attend; just reserve your spot at onehumanraceaustin.org. We’ll even provide lunch!
