Dear People of St. James’,
On Labor Day weekend, we turn our eyes and our hearts to workers and particularly to those who work in difficult environments and under unjust circumstances. It has been our tradition at St. James’ to invite those who are engaged in the struggle for worker rights to take their place in the pulpit. This year, I am delighted that Alondra Johnson will be offering us a word at the 8 am and 10:30 am services. (The Rev. James Harrington will preach at 1 pm and 5 pm.)
Alondra Johnson was born in Juarez, on the border between Mexico and the U.S., and moved to Austin at the age of eight. Growing up at the crossroads of two cultures and witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by immigrant families, she developed a passion for justice that would become the cornerstone of her career. Alondra earned a B.A. in Government and Mexican American Studies from UT Austin and went on to receive both an M.A. in Public Administration and a J.D. from Texas Tech University, equipping herself with the tools to advocate effectively for marginalized communities.
Throughout her career, Alondra has championed efforts to address discrimination and advocate for the rights of those most often overlooked. As an attorney at the Workers Defense Project in Austin, she represented immigrant construction workers in legal claims, focusing particularly on cases involving unpaid wages and unsafe working conditions. Alondra’s dedication extended beyond the courtroom as she led community education initiatives and built partnerships with local organizations, helping workers understand their rights and fostering a network of support.
Since attending St. James in 2017, Alondra has woven her commitment to justice into her faith community. She has served on the Vestry of St. James’, chairing the Finance Committee, and in the liturgical Ministries. Currently, she chairs the Board of the Welcome Table Austin, St. James’ 501(c)3. Through these leadership positions, Alondra continues to draw on her personal and professional experiences, working to build an inclusive community where everyone’s dignity is honored. Inspired by the resilience of her family and the communities she serves, she is honored to preach this Sunday at St. James’, a place where she has found both purpose and belonging.
Please join us on Sunday to hear a good word, to pray together, and to be sent into the world renewed.
Rev. Eileen
