Family Ministries Update

We ended 2019 with the Christmas Pageant and Kwanzaa, and started off 2020 with moments of community. Like the Children’s Service, our Epiphany gathering for High School students (where we made King Cakes from scratch), and a baby doll’s baptism with the children in Godly Play.

(Note: Simone has plenty of multicultural plastic mini baby figurines if anyone plans to make a cake for Mardi Gras Sunday at St James’.)

Changes

Children’s Service is now on 1st Sundays — all year round
4:30PM Children’s Choir rehearsal with pizza dinner open to all children AND youth,
5:30pm service the Children’s Choir sings, and children and youth gather seated at the altar to hear a children’s sermon (usually preached by Liz Powell).

Youth Journey is now 3rd Sundays at 4PM
Open to all middle school and high school students, this is our monthly gathering of youth to ponder questions big and small on our journey of faith, while we share a light meal together in the Orange Building at St. James’.

Simone Monique Barnes, Director of Family Ministries is now full time as of January 1.
Simone’s office is at the far end of the Orange Building, and she can be reached at familyministry@stjamesaustin.org

Where’s Our Family Minister?

Simone is traveling to Atlanta for the Episcopal “Rooted in Jesus” conference January 21-24 with guest speakers such as Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, The Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, and more. (Simone has a jam packed schedule of Christian formation, ministry, and anti-racism youth curriculum training.)
