Often, we’ve been led to see the Beatitudes as sweet assurances that those who suffer now on earth will find comfort after death. Liberation theologian Leonardo Boff rejects that view and turns the Beatitudes on their head, as it were, and sees them as a piercing message of Jesus. How does he do this?
