What is the One Human Race Initiative?
One Human Race is the racial reconciliation initiative of the Myra McDaniel Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians, which was founded by our own Ora Houston. We began at St. James’ in the early 2000s as a way to strengthen our own multicultural community. Our workshops and book/film studies have continued to play an important part in our life together by providing a foundation of common historical knowledge, a better understanding of the ways that the fictional concept of race has affected our ways of thinking, and an opportunity to learn about others’ experiences.
We have also carried the St. James’ experience of radical hospitality out into our larger community by creating safe, open, and productive environments to learn and share about the concept of race. Since we began actively promoting our program in 2014, we have presented at more than 24 churches and other organizations in the Austin area and throughout the Diocese, several more than once. One Human Race is one of the antiracism programs recommended by the Diocese of Texas and receives funding from the Episcopal Health Foundation. We remain an all-volunteer organization. Register here.
We hope you’ll join us as we continue to grow together.
