Tuesday, February 1: Join the Freedom School Community at Pecan Springs.

Help CDF Freedom Schools Austin celebrate the teachers and school staff of Pecan Springs Elementary School as we kick off Black History Month with a soul food luncheon on February 1. Desserts and volunteers needed. See form for details. Thank you!

Thursday, February 3: Black History Month Service of Evening Prayer with the Seminary of the Southwest

Sunday, February 13: Absalom Jones Commemoration at St. James’ Episcopal Church

The Rev. Dr. Dominique Robinson, Homiletics professor at the Seminary of the Southwest will preach at AM services, and Scott Madison will preach at the 5 pm.  Our liturgies will commemorate the life and legacy of The Rev. Absalom Jones, founder of the first black congregation in the Episcopal Church and the first African American ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church in the US.


Thursday, February 17: Well Now: Let’s Talk About Black Mental Health

This is a panel discussion on Black Health and Wellness featuring Dr. Marlon Johnson and the Rev. Jennifer Cumberbatch, moderated by Flora Fearon. It will be a virtual event on Thursday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. RSVP here to ensure you receive the Zoom link.


Sunday, February 20: St. James’ Reads Discussion the Spirituals and Justice

12-1 pm  In addition to reading Face to the Rising Sun together, we will also take a moment to reflect on a few of the spirituals that didn’t get into the book, which form a part of our life and liturgy at St. James’.   Join us for this hybrid experience, either in Founders Hall or on Zoom.

We’re focusing on this year’s Black History Month Theme “Black Health and Wellness” and featuring special guests: Children’s Book Author and Illustrator Don Tate, Black Girls Who Run Austin, Christopher Isom-Youth MOVEment Instructor, and CDF Freedom Schools Austin.
