When was the last time you read a story from top to bottom in one sitting? If it’s been a while, or you’re looking for any opportunity to do just that, then we have something for you. As we prepare to step into the season of Advent which sweeps us up into the imminent reality of God’s kingdom, we look to the Gospel of Mark. Mark’s gospel is swift and urgent, enticing us to perceive this reality and to do God’s work now before time slips away from us. The gospel was intended to be an auditory, communal event that gathered young with old, believers and skeptics, longtime followers and newcomers. The original listeners would have gathered as a community, captivated by the storyteller and allowing the story to live within their bodies. They may have been sitting on edge waiting to know how the story ends, laboring through the silent pauses, or keeping their ear perked for their favorite parts.
Hearing the multitude of voices from our community, St. James’ will reinvigorate this practice by tracing the entire arc of Mark’s story while inviting new revelations for our lives today. Join us online on December 5th at 1:00 pm as we read the Gospel According to Mark from beginning to end. Everyone, no matter your biblical familiarity, is invited to participate in this storytelling event.
