Juneteenth
June 19, 2020
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the freeing of people who were enslaved in the United States and dates back to June 1865. This is the day when Union soldiers reached the state of Texas with news that the Civil War was finally over. They were there, in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the decree of Emancipation that those who were enslaved were free, which had been legally put in place two-and-a-half years earlier on January 1, 1863. Freedom was delayed, but ultimately not denied.
People of St. James’, be on the lookout for with ways to celebrate Juneteenth with your family, however that may look for you. On June 19, be sure to visit the St. James’ website and Facebook page where there will be resources and opportunities to read, watch, listen, and discuss what liberation, and liberation delayed means to us in our specific Episcopal tradition.
Also, save the date for a special picture book storytime for children on Zoom with our Godly Play teacher and youth sponsor Alaina Monts on June 19, 10:30am to 11am.
