Today, the St. James’ Community rejoices with the leadership of our 501(c)3, Welcome Table. Yesterday, Impact Austin, an Austin-based women’s collective giving organization, announced that it was awarding a $75,000 Education grant to Freedom Schools – Austin, one of the two programs under the Welcome Table umbrella. This substantial one-year grant will assist the Freedom Schools program in adapting to new needs and circumstances related to COVID-19.
We see more than ever that elementary school kids and their families here in east Austin need Freedom Schools; and so we are seeking to pivot to provide increased support to parents and families and to nurture the spirit of Harambee (which means let’s pull together) in our east Austin community. Although the format of Freedom Schools will change because of the nature of this pandemic, we will continue to offer elementary school scholars safe spaces (virtual or otherwise) to engage their love of story, science, and learning.
Congratulations to those who have worked over the last six years to make Freedom Schools a joy-filled and life-changing program, that will continue to grow to make an even greater impact in east Austin.
