Reflecting on Huston-Tillotson’s Convocation

Dear People of St. James’,

On September 12th, I had the privilege of attending the fall convocation at Huston-Tillotson University. Unlike any other university convocation I’ve attended, this one was entirely Christ-centered, offering a profound glimpse into the heart of this historic institution and its unwavering commitment to a holistic education. As I entered the packed auditorium, the room was alive with the Spirit and a palpable sense of university pride.

Each speaker invoked the name of the living God, sharing messages that were not just for the students but for everyone present. President Wallace delivered a remarkable speech, which felt more like a sermon, focusing on the theme of “passing the baton.” She spoke of the university’s mission as an ongoing race, now entering its fourth leg, filled with hope and momentum. Gospel recording artist Dr. James Mable followed with a powerful testimony of God’s faithfulness, culminating in a musical offering that lifted the room and honored the Lord.

In that moment, I witnessed the true essence of Huston-Tillotson—a community rooted in faith and dedicated to the transformation of lives through education. The convocation embodied their mission to confront the challenges of the world while drawing strength from God’s grace. I saw a 150-year-old institution, grounded in its rich history, yet boldly looking ahead to a future shaped by faith and resilience.

As I reflect on this experience, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such a powerful gathering. The next 150 years on Bluebonnet Hill promise to be remarkable, and it is a profound honor for St. James’ and the Diocese of Texas to be part of our HT neighbors’ journey forward.
