SUMMARY:Honoring Joan Means Khabele at Barton Springs Pool
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Barton Springs Pool, 10 am on April 9, to honor our own Joan Means Khabele.\nFrom Joan’s sister, Janet:\nJoan is being honored for her attempt at integrating Zilker Springs pool.  The story goes that her Austin High class had planned a Senior picnic at the Park.  Joan was called into the Office and was told that she was considered the leader of the Negroes in her Class.  She was told to explain to her Negro classmates that they could attend the picnic but could not swim.\n\nOf course Joan swam.\nIt took two years of picketing the pool before it was integrated in the summer of 1962.\n\n
