I will sing praise with the Spirit, but I will sing praise with the mind also.
1 Corinthians 14:15
For 70 years strong, music has been an essential component of the life of our parish and the experience of worship at St. James’. Our church has served as a spiritual home and gathering place both for the talented professionals of Austin’s diverse music community and for parishioners who are moved by the Spirit to praise the Lord in song.
Our music ministry includes the choirs and instrumentalists who accompany three of our weekly worship services:
- Sunday 10:15 am: Our traditional full choir, with piano and organ
- Sunday 1 pm: Our Spanish service choir, with guitar and other instruments
- Sunday 5:30 pm: Our contemporary/jazz choir, with piano.
Service music at St. James’ includes selections from both the Episcopal Church’s 1982 Hymnal and the Lift Every Voice and Sing collection of sacred music in the African-American tradition, as well as other traditional and modern church music reflecting St. James’ multicultural community.
In addition to our service music, St. James’ music ministry also touches our children’s Christian formation and young adult programs and the wider community beyond our parish. The annual Jazz at St. James’ concert series has for more than 15 years been a fixture on the city’s musical calendar, bringing in nationally renowned artists to perform in concert, accompany worship services, and conduct workshops with young musicians.
