Weddings at St. James
"A marriage made in Heaven is one where a man and a woman become more richly themselves together than the chances are either of them could have managed to become alone. When Jesus changed the water into wine at the wedding in Cana, perhaps it was a way of saying more or less the same thing." Frederick Buechner
When we come together in the presence of God to witness and bless the joining together of a woman and a man in Holy Matrimony, it is an occasion of real joy in the life of the parish. It is also an event that needs preparing for spiritually as well as in wedding arrangements. Those planning to be married at St. James’ will need to arrange for premarital counseling with the clergy regarding “the nature, meaning, and purpose of Holy Matrimony.” That can sometimes sound daunting. It is really meant to sound helpful instead. The times when clergy can meet with the couple provide occasions for us to discuss any questions you might have, and we can spend time talking about marriage rather than simply discussion a wedding. The policies and procedures we follow are requirements of the Episcopal Church and are meant to be pastorally helpful, rather than just being regulations.
A priest of St. James’ will, as a rule, officiate at all weddings. Other members of the clergy, either of the Episcopal Church, or of other denominations, may be invited to share in the service. Weddings are not scheduled during the penitential season of Lent and are scheduled in the season of Advent only with special permission of the Rector. If you don’t know the times of the Church Seasons, this will make your premarital counseling all that much more informative. There is a thirty day waiting period for all weddings, and more time when either of the couple has been married before.
To begin this time of joy and preparation, please contact the parish office for more details, and for setting an appointment with the clergy of St. James’
